Glee is a fun show, where the “Glee Club” are singing popular songs. I like the show!

One of my favorite episode is “The Power of Madonna”:) Madonna is a genius, yes she is getting “old” but her music is still good. I prefer the “old Madonna”  with “Like a Prayer”, “Material Girl”, “Vogue”  etc… I like her!!!!!!!!!!

Madonna= constant evolution….

Glee–comparison of “Vogue” 🙂

Mr. Usher Raymond is back with a new song with the first lady of Young Money Miss Nicki Minaj. The song is good, the producer is Polow Da Don, he produced “Turnin Me On” from Keri Hilson ft Lil’Wayne. The video is hummm..lol. Miss Minaj is doing a good job, but I don’t like her hair. Why does she as 2 colors? (just watch the video and you’ll see what I’m talking about) Is she trying to look like Cruella from 101 Dalmatians (remember the Disney Movie?) hahah. I hope that the new album from Usher will be like the “Confessions” album which is a classic!!!:)

Okay, I had to put the pictures..But you still have to watch the video to see what I’m talking about!

Do you think she looked like Cruella?

Education?!? March 1, 2009

During class, we were looking at videos of Bell Hooks who is a female scholar who was doing a criticism about Popular Culture. She was talking about education and critical thinking. Hooks was saying that education is important but there is a difference in class culture, she was referring herself to Harlem and when she was teaching at Yale University.

Hooks was saying if you tell poor people that “you’re not good” they are going to think they are not good, but there are tools available for them to gain skills. Also if they have someone to tell them that they are good, well they will work hard for what they want to accomplish.

Also, related to that, Dr. Strangelove was saying that “education at the university level is important for the reason that it gives students critical thinking and an opening of the mind and self”. It is true that education gives us an opening of the mind since we have to be able to agree and disagree with people by giving arguments and reasons why we agree or do not agree. University, is a way for us students to work with tools to improve our arguments since we are learning theories.

Yes, I believe that education is very important if we want to become someone in the future.

Product Placement February 15, 2009

kanye-picsIn the music world, there are many elements, objects that we the viewers/audience which to have. Every videos or most of them have products that they are selling which can be called «product placement».

Product placement is a topic that we can observe in chapter 4 of Goodwin`s book (Dancing in the Distraction Factory). The author says: «…forms and commodity promotion into the video clip-a paractice that clearly devotails with the business of «product placement» (page:94).

For example, nowadays there is an accessory that we can see in videos from Kanye West (more specifically the one with Young Jeezy named :«Put On») or even the video where we can see the rapper Lil`Wayne in Kevin Rudolph «Let it Rock» video…this accessory is a scarf that comes in every colour.  We can`t pass a day without seeing someone wearing one of these scarves..

Personally, I think that it is a good product placement for the reason that everyone as one of them and right know this scraf is popular and fashionable.

Superwoman February 8, 2009

On page 75 of “Dancer in the Distraction Factory” by Goodwin, the author mentions  the concept of double address which he says :”is commonplace in pop songs” (page: 75). Also, he states: “When a pop singer tells a first-person narrative in a song, he or she is simultaneously both the character in the song and the storyteller” (p:75).

This concept is related to the R&B singer Alicia Keys song’s named “Superwoman”. In this song, Miss Keys is using the double address because she is using the personal pronoun “I” where she is reffering to herself (character). Also, she is the one telling the story (storyteller) about the superwoman.

We can see it in her lyrics…..

1-Even when I’m a mess, I still put on a vest, With an S on my chest, Oh yes, I’m a Superwoman (character)

2- For all the mothers fighting, For better days to come, And all my women, all my women sitting here trying To come home before the sun (storyteller)

“Superwoman” by Alicia Keys is showing the concept of “double address”

Consumers February 2, 2009

In class, we were having a discussion about the economic system.

Today, the economic system as many problems like the recession for example.  The teacher was talking about how the economic system produce us. I think it is true because we as, students or individuals are consuming a lot of things like: IPod, clothes, shoes,IPod Touch…. He also said that the media system company expands itself to retail. A good example that can be related to this, is “Hannah Montana/Miley Cirus”.  “Hannah Montana” is a show for kids/teenagers that is playing on the Disney channel. Everywhere we can see DVD, bags and even notebooks from Hannah Montana since she is very popular nowadays.

With this example, we can see that the media system which can be seen as the show, expands itself to retails which are all the clothes, bags..that are seliing from “Hannah Montana”. Moreover, I can add another example, SpongeBob SquarePants who has also a show on Disney Channel and also in stores we can see a lot of things that are selling from SpongeBob.
